The Planetary Research Group at North Carolina State University was founded in August 2015 by PI Paul Byrne. As of August 2019, the Group comprises the PI, seven graduate students, and four undergraduate students. With expertise in geology, geophysics, physics, UAV operations, and geoscience education, the Group focuses on research topics that span the Solar System.

Several graduate students are supported on NASA grants and fellowships, and Group members play an active role in the planetary science community by presenting at workshops and conferences, carrying out a range of service activities, and supporting the next generation of planetary scientists.
